Welcome!

Solved: Open .ASD file with Word 2010

Microsoft Word message - Microsoft Office Word cannot open this file because it is an unsupported file type

It might seem quite logical that you should be able to open a Word autorecover file with .asd extension with Word itsself by Open with -> Word. Well, unluckily Word announces that the file is of unsupported type and cannot open it.

Well, actually, it can. In Word 2010 go like this:

  1. Click on File
  2. Click Info -> Manage versions
  3. Click Recover unsaved documents
  4. Locate the folder where you have the .asd file
  5. Click on "All files" on the bottom right corner
  6. Select the .asd file and click Open to open it.

Voila!

NB. After Jasher's question about Word 2007 I thought I'd set up a whole new post about my findings how to recover an .asd file with Word 2007.

Is it possible to recover a "Rescued File," rather than Autorecover file? These steps don't work for a Rescued File :(

What about on word 2007? :(

I was able to recover text from .asd in 2007 like this: Open -> locate your .asd in Open dialog -> Select "Recover text from any file" from the dropdown where you can determine file type -> Click Open.

Doesn't do it perfectly though... even more surprising why Microsoft's support site says one can simply, with no h[censored]le, open .asd files through Open dialog.

Ask myself, answer myself - here's how I, after testing several ways, came up with how to open .asd files in Word 2007 joomlaboy.com/.../...
